Hardly anyone these days is under the impression that drinking sodas is in any way, healthy. In fact, sodas may well be the very unhealthiest of all the unhealthy possible options available to us. Soda serves no health benefit. They have no fiber to help blunt the massive sugar loads they deliver. They aren’t a natural source of vitamins or minerals. They aren’t calorically dense. In fact, as you will see in the graphic below courtesy of the RenegadePharmacist, they add in chemicals to help you refrain from vomiting the poison sugar loads.
And don’t think for a second that “diet” versions of these drinks are any better. In fact, many studies show them to actually be worse than their regular version counterparts. Sounds insane, right? Well often times the body treats fake sugar like real sugar, elicit an insulin response. Many people report huge weight loss and big health benefits just from ceasing consumption of sodas. If you still drink sodas, you might consider this.
I am going to show you a study which will blow your mind. A study that shows, in plain English, that our coveted mammograms just don’t work. I am going to contend that mammograms are a big, for-profit, machine that do nothing to help women evade the dark clutches of cancer.
Mammograms are almost the medical world’s most no-brainer ritual. If you are diagnosed with breast cancer and are found to have never received a mammogram, you are almost surely to be considered a woman who got what she had coming to her. It’s the sad fear-based marketing that puts breast in the machine, money in the machine maker’s pockets – with women being left out in the cold with an ineffective expenditure and false sense of security.
First, let’s begin with a study which occurred over 1 year ago. This is based on a 25-year-old follow up on breast cancer incidence and mortality of the Canadian National Breast Screen Study.
Women aged 40-49 in the mammography arm and all women aged 50-59 in both arms received annual physical breast examinations. Women aged 40-49 in the control arm received a single examination followed by usual care in the community.
So what were the results and the conclusion?
Results During the five year screening period, 666 invasive breast cancers were diagnosed in the mammography arm (n=44?925 participants) and 524 in the controls (n=44?910), and of these, 180 women in the mammography arm and 171 women in the control arm died of breast cancer during the 25 year follow-up period. The overall hazard ratio for death from breast cancer diagnosed during the screening period associated with mammography was 1.05 (95% confidence interval 0.85 to 1.30). The findings for women aged 40-49 and 50-59 were almost identical. During the entire study period, 3250 women in the mammography arm and 3133 in the control arm had a diagnosis of breast cancer, and 500 and 505, respectively, died of breast cancer. Thus the cumulative mortality from breast cancer was similar between women in the mammography arm and in the control arm (hazard ratio 0.99, 95% confidence interval 0.88 to 1.12). After 15 years of follow-up a residual excess of 106 cancers was observed in the mammography arm, attributable to over-diagnosis.
Conclusion Annual mammography in women aged 40-59 does not reduce mortality from breast cancer beyond that of physical examination or usual care when adjuvant therapy for breast cancer is freely available. Overall, 22% (106/484) of screen detected invasive breast cancers were over-diagnosed, representing one over-diagnosed breast cancer for every 424 women who received mammography screening in the trial. So after 25 years, the results of women who got mammograms and those who didn’t were almost exactly the same in terms of those who died from breast cancer. That’s as clear of a study as there ever could be. But then why, if this study has been out for over a year, would anyone remain a believer in the mammogram?
Breast cancer awareness month. This movement is huge. They even provide hosting for women in need to get mammograms. Any time we see charitable organizations dishing out “medical advancements,” we are subconsciously subjugated into believing that if we also don’t do the same, we are pompous and unfazed of our blessed lives. Breast cancer awareness month now has the support of the NFL. Which means they now influence men to persuade women into getting mammograms. The NFL is one of the largest TV contracts in the history of the world. Its influence is immeasurable. They change the player’s uniforms and cleats. They do promo spots. In addition to the NFL, all major television talk shows are involved in the campaign. It is a month of inescapable marketing.
What’s worse? The NFL campaign doesn’t fund breast cancer cures, it funds breast cancer marketing!
This is how it works: The NFL donates proceeds from its awareness campaign, auctions, and the NFL Shop to the American Cancer Society (ACS), which in turns uses that money to increase awareness, education, and screenings for women over 40.
“The money that we receive from NFL has nothing to do with our research program,” ACS spokeswoman Tara Peters told VICE Sports. All NFL donations go to ACS’ CHANGE program, through which the organization awards grants to “community based health facilities” located within 100 miles of an NFL city for educating women about breast health. The ACS could not provide the names of any of these health facilities, but it says that these centers have answered questions about early detection of the disease for at least 72,000 women in the last three years and screened 10,000 women at little or no cost. (you should do yourself a favor and read more from Vice here)
The study you just read above threatens the mammogram revenue machine. Just think about it for a moment, the volume of women getting mammograms; the absurd amount of profits from those visits. That’s not something that the mammogram industry intends to lose. But hopefully women can begin to share this information with other women and counter the mammogram marketing beast which for now, presides over us all.
Breast thermography is a radiation free way to look for issues inside of the breast region. Of course, we hear little about it. In fairness, it isn’t available everywhere (but that’s probably part of the overall protection of mammogram profiteering).
Low fat milk was all the rage for years. To be honest, I never really bought into it because I never fully bought into the low fat movement, but you couldn’t argue with the popularity of low fat food and drink options. Low fat milk was a huge seller for those people thinking they were being health conscious. But now the rub, which is, they probably weren’t being health conscious: instead low fat milk may have been serving as a detriment to their health.
Low fat milk containers added sweeteners. Remember, without fat or sugar, things just aren’t palatable. In order for a food or drink to be palatable to most people, you need one or both of them. According to the Daily Mail, David Ludwig, who has often likened sugar to poison, low fat dairy solutions are bad for us.
In a paper published, Ludwig argued that dairy products with added sweeteners are a detriment to one’s health and that drinking less milk isn’t necessarily a bad idea, provided you eat certain foods.
‘Americans are consuming billions of gallons of milk a year, presumably under the assumption that their bones would crumble without them,’ Ludwig wrote in an article published in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics.
The U.S Government recommends we drink 3 glasses of milk a day. Does anyone know anyone who actually does this anymore? I haven’t drank a glass of milk in 30 years at least. Ludwig is especially concerned with kids who are often forced by schools to meet Government food and drink recommendations. When given low fat versions of milk, they don’t typically like them, so schools replace them with sweetened versions such as chocolate milk.
But wouldn’t our bodies and our children’s bodies fall apart without milk and all that calcium? No, not at all. Spinach and Kale are both loaded with calcium. As adults, we can simply add in more kale and spinach using salads or even juicing them. With children who might be reluctant to consume these two greens, you can always sneak them into their food sources (food processors are a wonderful thing). If kids must have milk, you are best to avoid the sweetened versions, in particular chocolate and strawberry. Try to get whole fat versions of the milk. Sugar is the main problem here. With childhood obesity at an all time high, avoiding processed sugars has never been more important.
Other non-dairy calcium sources for people include: Sardines, Soybeans, Fortified cereals and orange juice.
Argentinian Federal Prosecutor Fabián Canda has filed a request to the highest court in Argentina asking the country to prohibit any sales of GMO seeds inside of Argentinian borders. These are seeds which are able to bypass pesticides, such as Round Up, which is also produced by the same company. The basis of the request is that Glyphosate is shown to be a carcinogen.
Canda has also asked for a ban on aerial spraying of glyphosate herbicides and a 5 km no-spray zone surrounding population centers, schools, villages, farm houses, rivers, lakes and groundwater wells.
Canda stated, “scientific studies and technical reports carried out at the local and international level, including reports produced by control bodies such as the Auditor General’s Office and the Ombudsman’s Office.” He went on, “these reports and the references in them reveal at least the probable harm being caused by glyphosate-based herbicides” and to ignore them “is to assume a position that contradicts the jurisprudence of the Federal Court on Environmental Matters, regarding the application of the precautionary principle by Argentinian judges.”
The United States is one of the loosest countries on earth when it comes to GMOs.
The pope wants everyone to stop freaking out about breastfeeding in church, according to a new translated video on Mic Media this week.
Why should anyone take issue with a woman and a baby acting holistically in their natural state? The fact is, this is how man evolved. Breast are, in essence, for feeding the child. For those who are constantly offended, the time might be now to loosen the heck up. Even the pope doesn’t care anymore!
By the way, breastfeeding is incredibly healthy for both mother and baby. While not every mother is able to breastfeed, we’d highly recommend those who are able to breastfeed to do just that! You and your baby’s ultimate health will thank you later in life!
We live in a stressful world. But often overlooked are simple ways to reduce our stress and create healthier lifestyles. Stress increases our risks for cancer and heart disease. Reducing stress is likely our first line of defense against disease.
So why not Yoga?
Sadhguru answers a question on the health benefits of yoga and explores exactly how yoga helps you stay healthy. He speaks about the energy body and its role in maintaining physical and psychological health, and explains how maintaining the vibrancy of the energy body ensures a healthy life.
Many people avoid yoga for fear of being uncomfortable in a group class. Yoga classes are now online, however, making them easier than ever to get involved with. Additionally, it might be a good idea to just throw yourself into the fire and show up for a class. Yoga is all about recruiting new people. It is an extremely welcoming environment. And you will likely make friends, to boot.
Concerned that you can’t tell the difference between GMO tomatoes and regular healthy tomatoes? Well, you are definitely not alone. But the good news is there is an easy way to tell the difference. And in learning how to tell the difference, we are also exposed to the nasty nature of GMO foods.
Our future is one that will have us unable to depend on appropriate, honest food labeling. So it is incumbent on us to be able to decipher good from bad when it comes to good. This video is a great start to that journey.
